<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At the January meeting of our Contemporary Quilt Group the technique we experimented with was monoprinting.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now, I had bad memories of this technique from City & Guilds - mainly because I always seemed to end up with dull, drab samples that didn't inspire me. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This time I was determined to put a more modern twist on the technique.</span></div>

I finally completed FOUR years of City & Guilds studies. I have now completed my 7113 in Creative Textiles which goes with my certificate in Patchwork & Quilting and award in Machine Embroidery.<br />
<br />
Anyone who cares to scroll further down this blog will see it is a very long time since I posted.<br />
<br />
The reason for this is that this time last year I was on the verge of giving up. I had had a very difficult journey with my Machine Embroidery which led to a severe blow to my confidence which made me question my ability to complete the course.<br />
<br />
But I am not a quitter and even though I needed to complete three units in the last 9 months I decided to stick with it and try to overcome some of my issues.<br />
<br />
And I have overcome them - I have produced some work I am proud of both from the design and the quilting perspective.<br />
<br />
So what about this blog? I was thinking of deleting it but have decided against this. The reasons for this decision are these. Firstly I still have 14 followers, now I know some of you are my quilting buddies but the rest of you have obviously hung on in there just in case I started posting again. Secondly I have noticed that I am still getting visitors who may find some of my experiences useful in their own C&G journey. Thirdly I have decided to try and keep doing a small amount of more experimental textile art and this blog would be a great place to share it.<br />
<br />
So that brings me on to the second important event of Saturday 24th September - I joined a new Contemporary Quilt Group. It is affliated with Region 14 of the Quilters Guild and is hoping to meet monthly in Clifford, near Wetherby, North Yorkshire.<br />
<br />
I have joined with my friend <a href="http://www.cottoncocktails.blogspot.com/">Hazel</a> and the first nice surprise was finding that another quilting friend, <a href="http://www.cottonconfetti.blogspot.com/">Davina</a> had decided to come.<br />
We had a lovely day, organised by Sandra and Penny and it was lovely to do design exercises (arty farty stuff!) with no strings attached! Just knowing that now you can do this for pleasure, work on it some more or just chuck it in the bin was so liberating!<br />
<br />
First we started with a collage!! One of my most loathed art forms in City & Guilds!<br />
But not this time - I just got on with it and had one put together in about 5 minutes!<br />
And here is a photo to prove it.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsPpUpPTNTA-XmqX2je4WoraWXmkoFDCZbRnvo1giZNurN0CGdGpKzGfOrD_L2eg60DkVEPtxGlabVvGRsZlrk4BYJixrJ3SUrEZzGqzASyZ-5ZV3BQiRtSmiwlKOHGmPc9brDOjVfzj3S/s1600/P1020332.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsPpUpPTNTA-XmqX2je4WoraWXmkoFDCZbRnvo1giZNurN0CGdGpKzGfOrD_L2eg60DkVEPtxGlabVvGRsZlrk4BYJixrJ3SUrEZzGqzASyZ-5ZV3BQiRtSmiwlKOHGmPc9brDOjVfzj3S/s400/P1020332.JPG" /></a> </div>Then we had to take one of the images (I chose the caterpillars in the top right) and draw some lines to represent what we saw. We then cut this drawing into strips and reassembled them to make a new design. Now I know this is pretty basic design stuff but I just got on and did it - no messing. Here is a photo of the result.<br />
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqcV447TbibhdRh4LwoPSlxigmHmjRumDlbWEqK6YTKKOgyynTGir2Hd_tWWHuBaVaBzMewaGGHJcekImeiirdoqn5DRxcY3dpZIxKH09vwgWzGQ9u7f_Ny3naDn8x_98C3L0kbLdnmql7/s1600/P1020333.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqcV447TbibhdRh4LwoPSlxigmHmjRumDlbWEqK6YTKKOgyynTGir2Hd_tWWHuBaVaBzMewaGGHJcekImeiirdoqn5DRxcY3dpZIxKH09vwgWzGQ9u7f_Ny3naDn8x_98C3L0kbLdnmql7/s400/P1020333.JPG" /></a> </div>I wonder if I will take this design any further - or just throw it in the bin?<br />

The image is of course my son's photo, taken of the motorway near Barnsley.<br />I printed the image onto lightweight vilene in black and white.<br />We were told to incorporate pintucks into the piece using the twin needle on our machines. I did thid using a red and orange thread to represent the lights from the cars.<br />I then used a silver metallic thread to machine quilt other areas such as the motorway sign and bridge.<br />I then added black borders and bindings.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2SG9dPcoD3LcbwKYOLcR16mdKcEkdCbLFPi0zBoHoA2sr-vZMpOi0Y1zsYp_HOuLcGBbp38JMaJsS_US2HMflrSMuf3kyX4kIuF7IL1XMGhMRxGKtznby4kPxJPr8ahRIDYmu7_uM1kJV/s1600-h/P1010031_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 339px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436752414888561618" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2SG9dPcoD3LcbwKYOLcR16mdKcEkdCbLFPi0zBoHoA2sr-vZMpOi0Y1zsYp_HOuLcGBbp38JMaJsS_US2HMflrSMuf3kyX4kIuF7IL1XMGhMRxGKtznby4kPxJPr8ahRIDYmu7_uM1kJV/s400/P1010031_edited.JPG" /></a><br /><div>This was a very difficult piece to photograph but hopefully you get the idea,</div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-35636358029306878912010-02-08T14:03:00.000-08:002010-02-08T14:11:10.262-08:00Shadow Applique Sugar Bowls.Here is another of my samples from November - on the image transfer theme.<br />The photos of the sugar bowls were transferred onto lightweight vilene and cut out carefully. They were then bondawebbed onto squares of hand dyed fabric. I have used pink and purple squares. The squares were joined into a four patch and then covered with a red net with sequins. I quilted around each sugar bowl.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB6tLScWSBJ5XIx-SHu2IBzDP9cxKZN-bMpPpdKQ5kKRCy0EoKBYjZBIxV3EklGUomXqP8CX6y7Crkxxh5eKE50j7pKZNcyGsWrnU_ivvSmNBRKYRnWofUjhLUngaSQ7psKrGApaCxwNMU/s1600-h/P1010069.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435997088996418434" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhB6tLScWSBJ5XIx-SHu2IBzDP9cxKZN-bMpPpdKQ5kKRCy0EoKBYjZBIxV3EklGUomXqP8CX6y7Crkxxh5eKE50j7pKZNcyGsWrnU_ivvSmNBRKYRnWofUjhLUngaSQ7psKrGApaCxwNMU/s400/P1010069.JPG" /></a>Although this is a simple technique I love the quirky design - it always makes me smile when I look at it! I think using the images for shadow applique works really well as it softens the look and feel of the vilene.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrFpRI29y_8fX8Rz6sOz_NM8YIuN14JA59rVfAI5dMbmj-mpefZAx_vZ4nCOSt4j-ZZKlgKelBCAWdf2g8jqk1881Sw-dxFENRPXvqD7nGP3MlLWA2W6N76Tdzoe-VLSAxgffQH_6R48Q1/s1600-h/P1010067.JPG"></a><br /><br /><div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-79401551088338728182010-01-30T10:04:00.001-08:002010-01-30T10:26:36.381-08:00Image transfer appliqueHere is another sample from my machine embroidery collection. It uses image transfer techniques combined with applique.<br /><div><br /><div>I started with a star which had been transferred onto fabric using transfer crayons.</div><br /><div>I appliqued it onto some green fabric using straight stitched raw edge applique in a variegated thread. I cut away most of the green fabric and then appliqued it onto the yellow fabric using gold metallic thread. All the fabrics in this sample are hand dyed.</div><br /><div>I then added pale green borders. The yellow square was free motion quilted and the border was quilted with star motifs in the variegated thread.</div><br /><div>I am quite pleased with the result - it is more free than my usual samples and I like the way the design has been built up out of several layers.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimUdY-RhyjijNn8yBfgJ9IL5O3dLYPmID1bD5G_SYt9gjikabgPppyGw6mJDrdeaIlCQJZ1I3HlArnVhWh70tVGTFjZUAva2m-hoTVkIxdZAnsunnY9JzQlFfRzuEkmXu3o3eluhBVhKbq/s1600-h/P1010069_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 385px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5432595886699772050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimUdY-RhyjijNn8yBfgJ9IL5O3dLYPmID1bD5G_SYt9gjikabgPppyGw6mJDrdeaIlCQJZ1I3HlArnVhWh70tVGTFjZUAva2m-hoTVkIxdZAnsunnY9JzQlFfRzuEkmXu3o3eluhBVhKbq/s400/P1010069_edited.JPG" /></a> <div><div></div></div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-36983959785991918912009-12-20T07:26:00.000-08:002009-12-20T07:35:14.048-08:00Paper weaving.The other set of artwork we did in November was paper weaving which I feel has thrown up some great ideas for quilts - particularly optical illusion quilts.<br />This first sample was weaving inside a shape which was based on one of the shapes from my 1960s plates. I really like the almost 3D effect that you get.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmXb9UFWYE0kkM8SUD_pz5s639gKjLNVL2n-fU_aXSRBjmDI3_3CsTdklGmkZ5Fw_4YqRnCH1wgkmmMeP7aOuu7uV5-O9ucs60EXRt4Dq2MOSSvTmQQrLTGxFr_AIzNHsXJL3lrBzgcUkH/s1600-h/P1010041_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 298px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417340748286985650" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmXb9UFWYE0kkM8SUD_pz5s639gKjLNVL2n-fU_aXSRBjmDI3_3CsTdklGmkZ5Fw_4YqRnCH1wgkmmMeP7aOuu7uV5-O9ucs60EXRt4Dq2MOSSvTmQQrLTGxFr_AIzNHsXJL3lrBzgcUkH/s400/P1010041_edited.JPG" /></a> This one is weaving using curved pieces, the black strips are curvy and the coloured strips are straight.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-OnkOk1n-_5TGSCM8OhGMnKZVPc3ar6ZR1vDLAqMmPpMFHUe8ZWvjgMsrLNtyf_X2p_cgEgWyCU6Z8OIStfEk9wdpfB9u4qiHeFqtpxbov5NI9taewac_EbhyphenhyphenZ1tbaKSm8-5U3DiQC6w/s1600-h/P1010043_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 305px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417340744130976450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-OnkOk1n-_5TGSCM8OhGMnKZVPc3ar6ZR1vDLAqMmPpMFHUe8ZWvjgMsrLNtyf_X2p_cgEgWyCU6Z8OIStfEk9wdpfB9u4qiHeFqtpxbov5NI9taewac_EbhyphenhyphenZ1tbaKSm8-5U3DiQC6w/s400/P1010043_edited.JPG" /></a> This one is weaving a photo with plain strips.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhclJMm4ytPWFKS2b-k247rKo98JzbKaRof22mkEPE9EuwJeVJ90W7X7Bg9eU-Q1pqdiDVYY3_O-P93aqEKvlRIh4WOWYOw7l7xcc8oxi0fFe_E6asUsatq1CntVllFmXx_cVzzjrDpnEr7/s1600-h/P1010037_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 303px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417340742507218962" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhclJMm4ytPWFKS2b-k247rKo98JzbKaRof22mkEPE9EuwJeVJ90W7X7Bg9eU-Q1pqdiDVYY3_O-P93aqEKvlRIh4WOWYOw7l7xcc8oxi0fFe_E6asUsatq1CntVllFmXx_cVzzjrDpnEr7/s400/P1010037_edited.JPG" /></a><br />This one is done using strips of varying widths.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdvI-6t20mLMi5g-Ld3-AYya6tLqLuuqSSkyZTgqNDyFfoBBAfEcV7SlJZk9Z8fo0uS2rcKb5WqwJsZF_orlYvHuOpLkwlXzjItqoWTU9UIouaDf-ngrKpupo-NHnEnKJcMu-qF7x23aFn/s1600-h/P1010035_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 279px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417340733895067314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdvI-6t20mLMi5g-Ld3-AYya6tLqLuuqSSkyZTgqNDyFfoBBAfEcV7SlJZk9Z8fo0uS2rcKb5WqwJsZF_orlYvHuOpLkwlXzjItqoWTU9UIouaDf-ngrKpupo-NHnEnKJcMu-qF7x23aFn/s400/P1010035_edited.JPG" /></a>I think that there are lots more ways that I could explore possible quilt designs using weaving as a basis. The samples are all machine stitched to the paper background. There are lutradur leaves which are painted but not heated, a tyvek and fibretex sample, a foil sample and a lutradur skeleton leaf sample.<br />I am quite pleased with the result but it will probably go into my 'Research for Design' file rather than my 'Machine Embroidery' Collection.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIfHum6lnfMmLT2eCR6gVJu6xjZ-woF6aevGdAcsESzdQswaKT0fiCb7Ly2FYfVMrRZjvEfrn82mhM88B6SbZD-xRSCUr6ut1Rc6QPrmkDyB3AgdDP7Exme_IhF_dHfbil-b45lJgOIaYS/s1600-h/P1010011_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 374px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5412440570652217138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIfHum6lnfMmLT2eCR6gVJu6xjZ-woF6aevGdAcsESzdQswaKT0fiCb7Ly2FYfVMrRZjvEfrn82mhM88B6SbZD-xRSCUr6ut1Rc6QPrmkDyB3AgdDP7Exme_IhF_dHfbil-b45lJgOIaYS/s400/P1010011_edited.JPG" /></a> The final sample is made using 'teabag foil' which shrivels when it is heated. This is literally the packaging that surrounds some teabags, last year I used foil crisp packets. You have to experiment because not all foil shrivels when it is heated.</div><div>It is based on one of my 1960s plates again but I decided to use this printed fabric as a background to experiment with my machine quilting. It was a very useful exercise in quilting in circles and quite enjoyable. It also produced one of my favourite samples!<br /><br /><div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-151310836471904612009-12-05T08:28:00.000-08:002009-12-05T08:51:16.018-08:00Lutradur and Xpandaprint samples.I am starting to work on this month's samples and have realised that I still have four completed samples to share from last month.<br />Here are the first two.<br />This first one is using xpandaprint which is a thick white fluid that you paint onto your fabric and when you heat it it puffs up to give a spongy texture. I decided to try stamping into it with my leaf stamp and this worked very well.<br />I then painted the leaf and background using acrylic paints, leaving the areas where the stamp had touched the background without any paint.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7tdwsJuH6RQuNNAuxzGchUEWMlbxyWKgrunDLxIby0Frbq0f_yluNeVXdg-tJVrUV18yE11lPrBle46JZ6m4SBGZA5aCHWY34z_T6NEv_LEaLUmJ_Rx7xx4A2n-Z0SC9zJjzQoSAAY-oG/s1600-h/P1010017_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411790667649327826" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7tdwsJuH6RQuNNAuxzGchUEWMlbxyWKgrunDLxIby0Frbq0f_yluNeVXdg-tJVrUV18yE11lPrBle46JZ6m4SBGZA5aCHWY34z_T6NEv_LEaLUmJ_Rx7xx4A2n-Z0SC9zJjzQoSAAY-oG/s400/P1010017_edited.JPG" /></a> I then cut around the leaf shape and appliqued it to the background using satin stitch.<br />The background fabric was decorated using the same stamp, using fabric paints.<br />Next the background had to be decorated with some more of those wacky machine embroidery stitches. Moss stitch has been worked around the immediate area surrounding the leaf. This is done by producing big loops with the bobbin thread and then removing the top thread to just leave the loops. I then had to iron some vilene onto the back to make sure it didn't all unravel!<br />Whip stitch is worked in the outer areas, this is another stitch where you can see the bobbin thread on the top but is not as pronounced as whip stitch which I did on the tyvek sample!<br /><br />I am still not sure whether I like these weird machine stitches but I was pleased to see that Alice Kettle has used them in some of her new work which was on show at The Knitting and Stitching show at Harrogate.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg973Rjv4jRALpEny5XJr0NYeezEca74crCKSGVO0kOV03rRjVm_1OUgcRNU7fmpTsnc7EwjceRGIPh8B2OLcctprJ5rvi4boSoRyTwgN3r0jh1HSbVSxDlCMNq6EDkH9MpeX-9qWNEE-2Y/s1600-h/P1010021_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 332px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5411790659400144818" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg973Rjv4jRALpEny5XJr0NYeezEca74crCKSGVO0kOV03rRjVm_1OUgcRNU7fmpTsnc7EwjceRGIPh8B2OLcctprJ5rvi4boSoRyTwgN3r0jh1HSbVSxDlCMNq6EDkH9MpeX-9qWNEE-2Y/s400/P1010021_edited.JPG" /></a> The second sample is made using lutradur leaves. I used the same leaf string print to print leaves onto lutradur. I then cut them out and appliqued them onto this green and yellow four patch block using metallic thread. I also stitched the veins in the leaves. I then free machined in a spiral design in metallic thread - this was a nightmare as the thread kept breaking. The spirals were meant to be much smaller but the thread broke even more if I tried to make them smaller. I then used a heat gun to burn away some of the lutradur - this left a lacy effect which allowed the background to show through which I thought worked well.<br /><br /><div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-89724351459203265432009-11-26T08:06:00.000-08:002009-11-26T08:18:38.317-08:00More photos for personal theme.I was at college last weekend and have shown my work to my tutor. She is really happy with my personal theme but said I needed to show more examples before settling on my area of focus which will be pottery by J&G Meakin.<br />We have been cleaning today and when washing some of the plates I have on display in the house I decided to photograph them before doing some artwork based on them.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZnlL6SOI0Fc_MCh-0hISvQvObt6odHVHeI2Ey14q7FAIGzZEPHE2kkrVbk0uf_5HY9eTcTS1Y4Yh_FKRVuBiUQwVkYUy0-3J-X_hyphenhyphenT11WC-9b7c4jZw-n1KDUp2HsOlkvFRiX3h8RzHo/s1600/P1010045.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408445250479759394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9ZnlL6SOI0Fc_MCh-0hISvQvObt6odHVHeI2Ey14q7FAIGzZEPHE2kkrVbk0uf_5HY9eTcTS1Y4Yh_FKRVuBiUQwVkYUy0-3J-X_hyphenhyphenT11WC-9b7c4jZw-n1KDUp2HsOlkvFRiX3h8RzHo/s400/P1010045.JPG" /></a> This plate is by Alfred Meakin and I just love the design - I would love to use that as a quilt design.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoN4XXysaz4bT29hbUUlyr8M9NlaW3Kv3u-2Nz2keaY3lVE3q0O9Z5igzmZ0-GmCW2FHTujus5erzWR1PdLHyv4qaeldvb0sWEfQOar8Dc_en5s1EAeE2OJvPtQC8zfdivod2l3C0WBkY/s1600/P1010056.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408445243378757986" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoN4XXysaz4bT29hbUUlyr8M9NlaW3Kv3u-2Nz2keaY3lVE3q0O9Z5igzmZ0-GmCW2FHTujus5erzWR1PdLHyv4qaeldvb0sWEfQOar8Dc_en5s1EAeE2OJvPtQC8zfdivod2l3C0WBkY/s400/P1010056.JPG" /></a>This photo is a closeup of a jug made by Wade. The theme for this set of samples was to use materials which can be burned, distressed or distorted using heat. Some of them I like and some of them I don't - however it has been valuable to experiment with them and some of them I may incorporate into my quilting.<br />The six materials we had to investigate were tyvek, fibretex, xpandaprint, kunin felt, lutradur and foil.<br />We also had to investigate some new machine stitches for embellishment - feather stitch, whip stitch and moss stitch. These mostly involve allowing the bobbin thread to appear on the front of the work - the situation we usually do our best to avoid!!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu_CRSpYQnF-V1WFdJkNWO4oTI3Q8RZCeh5uiiRRBB6sJIcCsvj6lO84m4ToWGIsMibVEMrKKKjNiiapUTVFv3kA2lbek3xHcMide0jrIXNwGejs3bkt1sxmJtH5mNiYdDzBYZPQR-COu3/s1600/P1010009_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 385px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405401706662709938" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu_CRSpYQnF-V1WFdJkNWO4oTI3Q8RZCeh5uiiRRBB6sJIcCsvj6lO84m4ToWGIsMibVEMrKKKjNiiapUTVFv3kA2lbek3xHcMide0jrIXNwGejs3bkt1sxmJtH5mNiYdDzBYZPQR-COu3/s400/P1010009_edited.JPG" /></a> This first sample is made using tyvek, strips of tyvek were painted and then woven through cotton threads that had been wound onto a picture mount board. Various scraps of fabrics were added and they were all secured with machine stitching. The whole thing was heated causing the tyvek to distort. The piece was then attached to a background fabric and embellished with beads.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9oJwLdhelH92l_qXz5NSZH8LQMwVbdghc8bud6mhj06rzzsUEDM5jZM7hl96udm7pFErn3HioMqKDYbApMA6jx1fzIN9kaGRa0UjODWxQHcvF_0s900dQVJEbOIM025ba7GHgSnPdXKed/s1600/P1010012.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405401702269782450" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9oJwLdhelH92l_qXz5NSZH8LQMwVbdghc8bud6mhj06rzzsUEDM5jZM7hl96udm7pFErn3HioMqKDYbApMA6jx1fzIN9kaGRa0UjODWxQHcvF_0s900dQVJEbOIM025ba7GHgSnPdXKed/s400/P1010012.JPG" /></a>A border was added and then it was backed with wadding and calico. The quilting was done with feather stitch which causes loops to appear on the right side.<br /><div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK-ybJ099c_hVZIdWF1Mr45mVR9TUNUp9KaSA4ut3gBb69cPHkC2KPChAEg2HgXjxs49-u5RIDuee0X-rDGC07MMmmv1brJEVeFfjU86fHWzROBRVk8jQHlst052bA0raZE9G8YEbLilSW/s1600/P1010014.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405401690086893634" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK-ybJ099c_hVZIdWF1Mr45mVR9TUNUp9KaSA4ut3gBb69cPHkC2KPChAEg2HgXjxs49-u5RIDuee0X-rDGC07MMmmv1brJEVeFfjU86fHWzROBRVk8jQHlst052bA0raZE9G8YEbLilSW/s400/P1010014.JPG" /></a>The second sample was made using fibretex and kunin felt. Three layers of fibretex were each painted a different colour. They were then layered with a layer of navy blue kunin felt on the bottom. The piece was machine stitched using metallic threads in a zig zag design to mirror the triangle in my Aztec plate. This was then heated with a heat gun and the coloured layers and felt backing were reavealed. I then took a square of turquoise hand dyed cotton and a square of lime green kunin felt and attached the heated sample to these using a machine zig zag in a variegated thread. The sample was then layered with wadding and backing and free machine quilted in a meandering design. The lime kunin felt was then heated to give that lacy effect revealing the turquoise background fabric.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEVc1a7hiG86raoAkZNHf7dUGl5oBXaaH42jolmRH6sSkIyKNqZXqwIbmqmeKRLhQzBtuM0j426NhMkdTnWU9jhdIGy69Jp7kfBzmzh92ZbOEbSUCvj_Hc5J2QJn-1ll4VlEBB0zAgRXNt/s1600/P1010015.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405401681238217778" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEVc1a7hiG86raoAkZNHf7dUGl5oBXaaH42jolmRH6sSkIyKNqZXqwIbmqmeKRLhQzBtuM0j426NhMkdTnWU9jhdIGy69Jp7kfBzmzh92ZbOEbSUCvj_Hc5J2QJn-1ll4VlEBB0zAgRXNt/s400/P1010015.JPG" /></a>The centre piece was then embellished with sequins and beads.</div><div>Both samples are the required 10 inches square.<br /><div> </div></div></div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-79798436624642734782009-11-14T06:27:00.000-08:002009-11-14T06:37:36.521-08:00Collages and Montages!Still not 100% sure what the difference is between a collage and a montage - but I think that the first two are montages because they contain whole images and the last one is a collage because a new image is made up from using different elements. Sounds impressive anyway!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX4JZ2qTodtlD2iBA8rgQLktHZsDaQ6PBIboGx020-0UwpDLMTrifgNwdI64CZghqBOxKZjqybgiDJvuiCV2Pq7VWpU8lRwslMgVru-slm00x0abK7Cfs0QmwbMihT7tycD0duvUJEtdTw/s1600-h/P1010030_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 268px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403966456657885394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX4JZ2qTodtlD2iBA8rgQLktHZsDaQ6PBIboGx020-0UwpDLMTrifgNwdI64CZghqBOxKZjqybgiDJvuiCV2Pq7VWpU8lRwslMgVru-slm00x0abK7Cfs0QmwbMihT7tycD0duvUJEtdTw/s400/P1010030_edited.JPG" /></a> This first one is my favourite - it is made up of images of my 1960s plates and some of my decorated papers.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8zjnK9711Np3mRDSmf-J0Tr_VwgvmF3XHlfa40GR2y9v6Q9bJiktWYtMhguhVKaNE5s4uK_KKypE7odaBQJRWHDlJvYdF2ed2KewaNa1-9XHtnAccM3l7At6CxQW1xQML0nd6EYVShyphenhypheni/s1600-h/P1010024_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 276px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403966454917597250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgA8zjnK9711Np3mRDSmf-J0Tr_VwgvmF3XHlfa40GR2y9v6Q9bJiktWYtMhguhVKaNE5s4uK_KKypE7odaBQJRWHDlJvYdF2ed2KewaNa1-9XHtnAccM3l7At6CxQW1xQML0nd6EYVShyphenhypheni/s400/P1010024_edited.JPG" /></a> In this one I tried to use the leaf shape to showcase the different decorated papers - monoprinting, sponging, using a roller, rubbings and sponge printing.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabal3zOM80NcNU6eDgdzNTTYQedhO6s50gaLh8h6MX42P7KfGKohD0D3tv_xC40NC2lh-BcOWnzLvuFRNF6_Zoo_S2bjqIrerQh-oQqavHhTSkVPVRd0eYixJ3u3OfwkGgTmrjxEUXEvY/s1600-h/P1010034_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 275px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403966444578094658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgabal3zOM80NcNU6eDgdzNTTYQedhO6s50gaLh8h6MX42P7KfGKohD0D3tv_xC40NC2lh-BcOWnzLvuFRNF6_Zoo_S2bjqIrerQh-oQqavHhTSkVPVRd0eYixJ3u3OfwkGgTmrjxEUXEvY/s400/P1010034_edited.JPG" /></a><br />This is my collage which turned out better than I was expecting although I still can't decide which way up looks best! Now, this is a big thing for me because usually I do my stitching homework and leave the artwork until the last minute.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFH-lVXAsHs_NWsG5SN1SvN1RpewloHq-5Ru3OVbrw0ms6SWzwxKOPa37GBjfsojZI29ZDWziVIf2dkoA-DA-lgoq1ITX68evmO_XLCmML2PqkSniu2GaXNkwZAEMgP_cW-6AP4bI1Zbwn/s1600-h/P1010020_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 280px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5403201556828752146" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFH-lVXAsHs_NWsG5SN1SvN1RpewloHq-5Ru3OVbrw0ms6SWzwxKOPa37GBjfsojZI29ZDWziVIf2dkoA-DA-lgoq1ITX68evmO_XLCmML2PqkSniu2GaXNkwZAEMgP_cW-6AP4bI1Zbwn/s400/P1010020_edited.JPG" /></a> This is a sponge print based on one of the plates from my personal theme. My personal theme is 1960s pottery and so far I have used three pieces of pottery made by J & G Meakin.<br /><br />The first piece of artwork is a string print of a leaf taken from one of my pieces. I printed it using acrylic paint and then coloured the leaves and the background with drawing ink.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjdCzFAHhZtfkVil40s2d7ZHqKO-2D3P2muUppBf9D0D49upBJxNpoGXsU-FdWo8z7RtCvg7I6Sx9Gk4tB5RYQ1UJ-b1nNnLbqCN-lNn2O8AjFnCsJgIjIgt8q4m9BgCoJyINyHR9ehTip/s1600-h/P1010018_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401738818752424210" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjdCzFAHhZtfkVil40s2d7ZHqKO-2D3P2muUppBf9D0D49upBJxNpoGXsU-FdWo8z7RtCvg7I6Sx9Gk4tB5RYQ1UJ-b1nNnLbqCN-lNn2O8AjFnCsJgIjIgt8q4m9BgCoJyINyHR9ehTip/s400/P1010018_edited.JPG" /></a> The second sample is scraffito again based on a design on one of my pieces of pottery. The crosses were done in wax crayon and then I washed over the whole page with brown ink. Then I went over just the crosses in black ink. The crosses were then scratched back to reveal the wax crayon underneath.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPw8BndrRb3vsQkNAfuZWNCPSx_UZhyMz-tbuoY8L-XaQEvlSQT_WMpc70ajs9Z8Fh-ukBTn3jToMsuzIpxNmgIPwaafadtP9be_2G9AE3glgg_HphVJTKy78l_g-f0MpIU2zHTlwe_6Fb/s1600-h/P1010017_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401738816742916290" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPw8BndrRb3vsQkNAfuZWNCPSx_UZhyMz-tbuoY8L-XaQEvlSQT_WMpc70ajs9Z8Fh-ukBTn3jToMsuzIpxNmgIPwaafadtP9be_2G9AE3glgg_HphVJTKy78l_g-f0MpIU2zHTlwe_6Fb/s400/P1010017_edited.JPG" /></a> Here are the photos of the two pieces of pottery used as inspiration.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxvPClds71-ZRG337LaQH_kaAsJg-F6q-JgRlODi9gzKOApHfVIsKtWfPQ8425_I1TRYqxOgcQUtCi4UMx5E8VHXwkYVe8PIwZeacwmjNRnmNJo71TaZWYleFTyuRUjVBl7AM5Vo9hyphenhyphenWx/s1600-h/P1010181_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 324px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401738809112790530" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxvPClds71-ZRG337LaQH_kaAsJg-F6q-JgRlODi9gzKOApHfVIsKtWfPQ8425_I1TRYqxOgcQUtCi4UMx5E8VHXwkYVe8PIwZeacwmjNRnmNJo71TaZWYleFTyuRUjVBl7AM5Vo9hyphenhyphenWx/s400/P1010181_edited.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYeJBn-DMCy8FNaeDAXXnw9qhr1LU1i0K1H3cmkEzQNvTlyuuSHDv3oxfDqyriHVwNhB4WTji0JR3wxN8OZh4Q8mkbNE6LQ4lqnbF9Q1Pw-FY9q72nBpJqLG1kVqaN6Jlq6IBuTILy6ov7/s1600-h/P1010186.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401738805255959826" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYeJBn-DMCy8FNaeDAXXnw9qhr1LU1i0K1H3cmkEzQNvTlyuuSHDv3oxfDqyriHVwNhB4WTji0JR3wxN8OZh4Q8mkbNE6LQ4lqnbF9Q1Pw-FY9q72nBpJqLG1kVqaN6Jlq6IBuTILy6ov7/s400/P1010186.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-94133946888616972009-10-19T06:05:00.000-07:002009-10-19T06:19:44.523-07:00Two samples made into mini quilts.I have just completed my second weekend at college and have come home with lots of new samples to work on and I even did quite a lot of artwork!!<br />Before I start to show them I wanted to complete my posting of samples from the first weekend.<br />To remind you most of the work was done using automatic embroidery stitches on the sewing machine. My personal theme is 1960s pottery and I have used two plates to inspire the two mini quilts. The photos are a visual guide on how I went from plate to quilt - there is more detail on how I made them on my other blog.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1YYhGhQOy3f0Pb7PN5vHzJqqvrX6ehuDpeOETSD-APYg5VxJVCedHYDC_XmTZVnAnwIqu0rfrWjjXiQLXuW8BvP_UzRilwD-3YVi7aSRCRoc9vDrUVPjrkuBLdXZppdXO7hNcWWXCIqW/s1600-h/P1010157.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394298420079738786" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii1YYhGhQOy3f0Pb7PN5vHzJqqvrX6ehuDpeOETSD-APYg5VxJVCedHYDC_XmTZVnAnwIqu0rfrWjjXiQLXuW8BvP_UzRilwD-3YVi7aSRCRoc9vDrUVPjrkuBLdXZppdXO7hNcWWXCIqW/s400/P1010157.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr9u2-boUaXpvvPmeN2W8nX1kOX2yoiboCHQcmSukthhUhgOYGC7KfSiCndRAJrbbx38NpNs7d8-17PMgAKRHNSLXdhIbIcxULQ44A3l_hiDWlzuQ22nYXOPWWbs4IoWa9XNVspcKwGMMG/s1600-h/P1010155_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 369px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394298403771317138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr9u2-boUaXpvvPmeN2W8nX1kOX2yoiboCHQcmSukthhUhgOYGC7KfSiCndRAJrbbx38NpNs7d8-17PMgAKRHNSLXdhIbIcxULQ44A3l_hiDWlzuQ22nYXOPWWbs4IoWa9XNVspcKwGMMG/s400/P1010155_edited.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ21JWgEFJZ2DsG3YEpOjPOwQqcCkKVI1B84iI7aAKX4Y7ItYJU5ZT4HcSPdkU08ByLp5bOxgkf4IXbBJg0c18xEA-RV3B506ekabTVeiJ2Ls2vJ0uJ5kxVYymq_W4f34EdKHkzwieZx_I/s1600-h/P1010177_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 396px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394298395622613522" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ21JWgEFJZ2DsG3YEpOjPOwQqcCkKVI1B84iI7aAKX4Y7ItYJU5ZT4HcSPdkU08ByLp5bOxgkf4IXbBJg0c18xEA-RV3B506ekabTVeiJ2Ls2vJ0uJ5kxVYymq_W4f34EdKHkzwieZx_I/s400/P1010177_edited.JPG" /></a>This quilt is free motion quilted using the automatic stitch.<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH6mnr4g9XE412XFr-fFhN_qnvwFDsce0Bnv6VL87wFAqaxq7ViTGTn6yCPfqyfQaCkN-rtRo4jnfrfMJRtdZC7Ua3gcsdSWBTAtp2JmItMMiKv7xgulRfiPhQApljDwFGzb-U5oKsMWyA/s1600-h/P1010186.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394297934829323298" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH6mnr4g9XE412XFr-fFhN_qnvwFDsce0Bnv6VL87wFAqaxq7ViTGTn6yCPfqyfQaCkN-rtRo4jnfrfMJRtdZC7Ua3gcsdSWBTAtp2JmItMMiKv7xgulRfiPhQApljDwFGzb-U5oKsMWyA/s400/P1010186.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGCaOyooJ70hXP_3BNX4wSYXw_pbaWrf-63S9DFBoZGwnTuLZYpFvwuE0RCPobWvtJNTGyX3522OQdTyITfFvAMahHS4vFibAM-SVUbSHB3UE6O-0Zsoew5BFWcrlBYBt7phXtaGOMpQeC/s1600-h/P1010187.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394297932065574658" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGCaOyooJ70hXP_3BNX4wSYXw_pbaWrf-63S9DFBoZGwnTuLZYpFvwuE0RCPobWvtJNTGyX3522OQdTyITfFvAMahHS4vFibAM-SVUbSHB3UE6O-0Zsoew5BFWcrlBYBt7phXtaGOMpQeC/s400/P1010187.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFzTiqyo2qjlOATpWZfc36ty-zL-wimJUWIJWpwGHSCIeHigpEJcJF4eEnyYIUudJvRuNvSFVymyMxvE6GBdlW7lDeBsDMmu3eUXaLcOVk45TcCqygvZKosK-T_skPHKUzB8F6mlPkskk/s1600-h/P1010092_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394297923932092930" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFzTiqyo2qjlOATpWZfc36ty-zL-wimJUWIJWpwGHSCIeHigpEJcJF4eEnyYIUudJvRuNvSFVymyMxvE6GBdlW7lDeBsDMmu3eUXaLcOVk45TcCqygvZKosK-T_skPHKUzB8F6mlPkskk/s400/P1010092_edited.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZYokT-PIBalcJXK-F6RlvWPeL6xggvpfRfqSi0kWXw-ZTN6t-T48xAe8TpqU3gdPeP5UzfqjygFqQJDEF1k6lNJQKOe9Udrn6u15WLnO_eB1uNzA-4QiuiJzbzOlD2ZshRORv6vSGE0V/s1600-h/P1010189_edited.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 388px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394297914988094882" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZYokT-PIBalcJXK-F6RlvWPeL6xggvpfRfqSi0kWXw-ZTN6t-T48xAe8TpqU3gdPeP5UzfqjygFqQJDEF1k6lNJQKOe9Udrn6u15WLnO_eB1uNzA-4QiuiJzbzOlD2ZshRORv6vSGE0V/s400/P1010189_edited.JPG" /></a>This quilt uses the automatic stitch to embellish the stars over the sheer fabric. It has been lovely to meet up with everyone again and to celebrate Rachel's significant birthday with yummy chocolate cake.<br />The following photos have been taken to help us work on our samples for next month. They have all been made by our teacher Ann who has generously agreed to allow me to share her work with you. Ann is very generous in sharing her knowledge, books and materials and has done loads of samples with materials that change when heated. I have completed two more samples and have one prepared, ready to stitch.<br />However I have not done any of the artwork homework. As a minimum I need to do a string print and a scrafitto. I started both at college last month but have not touched them since.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhSi4HwgSl2CyU3Nh3AYng-FdYUEdJ0gcwrJoqB1HtpKm9Fl4FSt3U97uDcjN2kUyf7aFEmjUCZ_VHcyhtkH7wcFFtSABrpKJpqNvkVDy_y-DzbGsBsh1A895tNMqAFFzA4Al3IdpzKb1/s1600-h/P1010151.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 299px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392585497672167122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZhSi4HwgSl2CyU3Nh3AYng-FdYUEdJ0gcwrJoqB1HtpKm9Fl4FSt3U97uDcjN2kUyf7aFEmjUCZ_VHcyhtkH7wcFFtSABrpKJpqNvkVDy_y-DzbGsBsh1A895tNMqAFFzA4Al3IdpzKb1/s400/P1010151.JPG" /></a> This sample above is my least favourite so far - in fact the only bit of it I like is the stitched border on the black card!<br />I scrunched up some tissue, stuck on some pictures from a magazine, added glitter and wax crayon shavings. This was then sandwiched between two layers of cling film and ironed to melt the wax crayon. Even though I used baking parchment to protect the iron the clingfilm has melted in places! I then used the automatic stitch to embellish it. This was done in little segments to give a stop start effect, but I also stitched around the paper shapes.<br /><div><div> </div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1834820481458903270.post-896296434552329222009-10-04T14:39:00.000-07:002009-10-04T15:07:55.087-07:00Machine embroidery samples with automatic stitchesMy next sample was made using an automatic stitch on the sewing machine but by altering the stitch length and width to give different effects.<br />I started by attaching quality street cellophane wrappers to vilene in a random pattern. I then covered it with two layers of net, one green and one white. It was backed with a black and white zebra print fabric to give a bit more interest to the background.<br />I then added wadding and calico backing. The automatic stitch was done as free machine quilting but altering the stitch length and width every few inches.<br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj_UKyVmAM2lFm9nS0d9R2MZxLofxoDC7XhC35J4C6eav9EBYD9jigjaF5Zc3yvJY3Qxx2k8H_1hzt_J617Kel37ZzLgXS5TOvBZZyuFqneNBIVkpRmCMsUSCnSiH-kamScWmYP2OmbYmp/s1600-h/P1010117.JPG"></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii2aSNfS4jXhV9OVNma-4KCKThS7GS73tmbXeY7wPIspsmJKbz2QicwRWQANlNXO1hSAhG7n8EgFc3JjyI_H-80Ii7-9xa4O6FDgh90AVN4R6fg3fNDUXRZRs2sYAIkSSxGl_bZn4debWb/s1600-h/P1010116.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388863563057862242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii2aSNfS4jXhV9OVNma-4KCKThS7GS73tmbXeY7wPIspsmJKbz2QicwRWQANlNXO1hSAhG7n8EgFc3JjyI_H-80Ii7-9xa4O6FDgh90AVN4R6fg3fNDUXRZRs2sYAIkSSxGl_bZn4debWb/s320/P1010116.JPG" /></a> I then added borders in hand dyed cotton and quilted this with the walking foot but using the same automatic stitch in two of its variations.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JX4WMmjgoXZ_Gs-87wimhUcBbk_td_gWI21CfhPj0lb31gU5XoEGiy_i1n4bGkpHMoF8tnS8LfiqhMtNyYlK9t0lziALzGCwuDhjahoMw9W-VZ7ivTervktz1Cg5PjoXorW23bLIc8PH/s1600-h/P1010113.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388863556823687922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JX4WMmjgoXZ_Gs-87wimhUcBbk_td_gWI21CfhPj0lb31gU5XoEGiy_i1n4bGkpHMoF8tnS8LfiqhMtNyYlK9t0lziALzGCwuDhjahoMw9W-VZ7ivTervktz1Cg5PjoXorW23bLIc8PH/s320/P1010113.JPG" /></a> This sample shows the different automatic stitches that I tried before deciding which one to choose for my sample. There are six of us doing the first year of Creative Techniques and we all have blogs so you will be able to follow our progress from the links on this blog.<br />Our first topic for the machine embroidery unit was crazy patchwork and I have completed my samples.<br />The use of recycled materials is emphasised on this course so I decided to make a sample with my recycled shirts but using all the bits I don't use for quilting such as the collars, labels, cuffs, pockets etc.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388129915888823138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnmy2Vyekqk3YY9dHBnULQUt_izm2F2FwdzqHx2qkoBp4Pj6AlMKomKr4QSlh4c7OcJTzUEUhIl5kLxSeCG86MjNnbXZrZ_eAcbHf0UKx17IRbTGOKYY5XbGi7Q4pTmIa1N99jiSE3RK1K/s320/P1010069-2.JPG" />The idea of the sample was to use automatic stitches on the sewing machine to embellish the edges of the crazy patchwork<br />The binding is made from the button bands<br />I really enjoyed making it and I love the result.</p><br /><p></p><br /><p><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388129913079599346" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0BrppK29tT4lm48EXnRw7NehCWXDyHY70TTUot42RTiK-8eoNCYwQv-pJc32QV6cV0Ss57RALffYZWqf4spK-OSybG6FnH8SYYIaVh8t3fSC1t1_l2Jp2-MODf0AMudyuPe4ExzBUW-f5/s320/P1010074-1.JPG" /></p><br /><p></p><br /><p><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhomOdZ91-FP9u45eU3BiEYhdxZcvmdiFtUsAfUrIcfmMR03d80hgrX2742Qoi7g6nX5GNaxFqMpgCPH3p6rXoeIeuvP61a-AFm7UjQ_z6WlArgMRgY2prs1_A-23xyP48bpvsKzcd53OYX/s1600-h/P1010076-1.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388129901219297250" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhomOdZ91-FP9u45eU3BiEYhdxZcvmdiFtUsAfUrIcfmMR03d80hgrX2742Qoi7g6nX5GNaxFqMpgCPH3p6rXoeIeuvP61a-AFm7UjQ_z6WlArgMRgY2prs1_A-23xyP48bpvsKzcd53OYX/s320/P1010076-1.JPG" /></a><br /><br /></p><br /><div style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px">The second sample is paper patchwork which was a lot of fun! I will fill in the details of the units I will be studying later.<br />I have decided to make a fresh start here on this blog with the new course and hope to post my progress on a regular basis.<br /><br />We have been asked to choose a personal theme and I have selected 1950s/60s pottery of which I have a collection. I love the patterns, particularly the more abstract ones.<br />So here are a couple of photos to get us started<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1bhoyu0tWhdZJA7pQYjp2wcBrBlE_SA5UNrAmJZlvFSa92iIiTY-rYo5F14f7hOQCRHdjRXrOmtuFNfT-fxwjvphJm44niD7dLePI3LHirOdoqpnwPlSfD4gIZ9d3LidixhW9eDl36_Hf/s1600-h/P1010042.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385145328339121906" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1bhoyu0tWhdZJA7pQYjp2wcBrBlE_SA5UNrAmJZlvFSa92iIiTY-rYo5F14f7hOQCRHdjRXrOmtuFNfT-fxwjvphJm44niD7dLePI3LHirOdoqpnwPlSfD4gIZ9d3LidixhW9eDl36_Hf/s320/P1010042.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgghWyZ25y8yXICQ_Ke0fT5JT3TeIrCYwwlnoYeOal30Xle8Rexqyd9BYN5m8E266vwk9npUl8Swh3Uyh9sW1efP0Kqd2auXqbpvFqJoDxIn3MeENA-zbyaBl1RKHQ6_RhOceZpiB1xcEB-/s1600-h/P1010043.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385145315757396690" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgghWyZ25y8yXICQ_Ke0fT5JT3TeIrCYwwlnoYeOal30Xle8Rexqyd9BYN5m8E266vwk9npUl8Swh3Uyh9sW1efP0Kqd2auXqbpvFqJoDxIn3MeENA-zbyaBl1RKHQ6_RhOceZpiB1xcEB-/s320/P1010043.JPG" /></a> These are both designs by J & G Meakin.</div><div>One of the areas I hope to concentrate on this year is artwork so today I visited Colourcraft in Sheffield to top up my supplies.<br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOT5ssMpX2vauxf3vCoKAgsyc-zQ9dAxZ_aSe_20cPZZ7-rMOclnYnb0ZRlUZVamBeJKuhLG7i6Vas-a4rXGjCZf65ao6E_YwsMv3VC8s9bSwHLKJXLb2KfHvnKgEgsBbxptwY3NYE66A0/s1600-h/P1010051.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385145308456942594" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOT5ssMpX2vauxf3vCoKAgsyc-zQ9dAxZ_aSe_20cPZZ7-rMOclnYnb0ZRlUZVamBeJKuhLG7i6Vas-a4rXGjCZf65ao6E_YwsMv3VC8s9bSwHLKJXLb2KfHvnKgEgsBbxptwY3NYE66A0/s320/P1010051.JPG" /></a> All my general quilty stuff will still continue on my other blog!<br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com4
